Internship Opportunities at Research Support Instruments (RSI)!

RSI are looking to fill two intern positions for their new Drone-based remote sensor project! RSI is a company that focuses on missions to space and they’re located in Lanham, Maryland. The job descriptions are listed below, if you’re interested send your resume to hatch@rsimd.com.

“Research Support Instruments (RSI) is looking for an intern, with an opportunity to start immediately, to assist with a strategically important product development effort utilizing drones to capture and process data that can be converted to vegetative indices, such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NVDI), images for use by farmers, academic institutions and governments to improve the lives of a country’s citizens by predicting yield and determine the need for water, fertilizer and insecticide use.

The RSI office is in Lanham, Maryland and has enjoyed key roles in Government and commercial space experiments and technology demonstrations.  Examples include the highly-successful NRL Clementine lunar mapping mission, the long-term monitoring of atmospheric ozone, ground breaking plasma physics research and the NASA GOES-R series geostationary weather satellites.

RSI needs a self-starter who can work with minimal oversight and has a desire to learn and apply new skills.  This position is integral to the success of the project and you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your programming and analytical skills as a significant member of the development team.”

Drone Mounted Sensor Package Design Internship

Our selected intern will design, fabricate (using 3D printing as well as traditional methods), integrate the physical mounting system and protective cases for integrated instrumentation equipment mounted on the drone.  Additionally, there are several other mechanical and software programming elements required for the drone mounted sensor system to capture, store, and download data.  There are flight software enhancement opportunities for the candidate who has the background, interest and aptitude for programming.   There is an opportunity for training as a drone pilot – prior experience is beneficial, but not necessary.

The background needed to apply for this project is a mechanical aptitude.  Familiarity with SolidWorks or other design program(s) is desired.  Linux programming experience is a plus.  A background or major in mechanical engineering, physics or other STEM discipline is necessary with at least 2 years of college as a baseline.

Drone/Satellite Image Processing Internship

Our selected intern will learn advanced image processing methods that enable the production of scientific quality geo-rectified vegetative images.  They will use this newfound skill to streamline and improve our current processes.

The background needed for this project is programming experience with C, C++, and/or MatLab. IDL experience is a plus.  A background or major in computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering or other STEM discipline is necessary with at least 2 years of college as a baseline.
