Duke-Sloan Boot Camp – Deadline July 12th!

Each September, The Duke-Sloan and Pratt School of Engineering Graduate Boot Camp brings to Duke talented undergraduates in chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, and statistical science. The Boot Camp will encourage participants to think critically about their research interests and skills, provide practical strategies for the graduate admissions process, and introduce participants to Duke’s Sloan departments.

2019 Duke-Sloan Boot CampThe 2019 Boot Camp will be held September 5-7. The application period  will open soon and will close July 12 at 5 p.m. Selected students will be notified by July 31.

September 2019 Boot Camp Details

  • Dates: Participants arrive Thursday, September 5. The Boot Camp will be held on Friday, September 6. Participants will depart on the morning of Saturday, September 7.
  • Tentative Time: 8:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Location: Duke University West Campus
  • Cost: Workshop expenses, including travel expenses, lodging, and meals, will be paid for by The Graduate School, the Pratt School of Engineering, and the Duke University Center for Exemplary Mentoring.

  • Meet faculty and students in your research interests
  • Participate in campus tours

Application

Boot Camp attendees will be selected in a competitive process based on academic curriculum and performance, as well as their commitment to research.

Application Dates

  • Apply by: July 12, 2019, 5 p.m.
  • Submit faculty recommendations by: July 19, 2019
  • Selected students notified by: July 31, 2019

Criteria

  • Must be available for full workshop on Friday, September 6, 2019.
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA or above.
  • This workshop is intended for students from racial, ethnic, and gender groups historically underrepresented in computer science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistical science, and engineering. These groups include female/female-identifying students, and students from African-American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, and Native American racial/ethnic groups.
  • Must have an interest in pursuing a graduate degree in chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, and statistical science, or related STEM field.
  • Must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior in the 2018-19 academic year.

  • Submit up to two faculty members from whom we can request recommendations that can speak to your potential in a research/academic environment (one required)
