The National Association of Counties is seeking a candidate for its internship program under the Government Affairs Department. Under the direction of the Associate Legislative Directors, this position focuses on duties associated with preparing department-wide legislative analyses, preparing for and conducting meetings and educational sessions held in conjunction with NACo conferences. In this role you will gain valuable exposure to lobbying strategies, perform supportive administrative duties such as providing answers, both oral and written, to membership inquiries on legislative matters. This is a paid hybrid internship at $17/hour for 10-15 hours a week.

- Pursuing (at least Junior standing) or completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the preferred fields of political science, economics, or related field.
- Background and/or interest in government affairs.
- A can-do attitude, the ability to handle multiple tasks, strong oral and written communication skills, and a keen eye for detail.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
- Assisting the Associate Legislative Directors with department wide projects including, but not limited to, legislative analyses, weekly blogs on regulatory and legislative actions.
- Assisting the Associate Legislative Directors with the department’s grassroots advocacy needs, primarily around COVID-19 relief and county finances. This includes developing and electronically mailing action alerts, special legislative updates and press releases when necessary. This also includes assisting Associate Legislative Directors/Public Affairs with social media advocacy efforts.
- Responsible to perform legislative research on issues relevant to the legislative department.
- Responsible to learn and manage various NACo web software used by the Government Affairs Department for communications needs including NACo Advocacy Resource Hubs.
- Regular outreach to and communication with committees and county officials.
- Researching and identifying relevant legislative topics and issues.
- Prepare and/or type correspondence and prepare necessary labels, envelopes, digital mail merges etc., for mailings and other distributions.
- Supporting Associate Legislative Directors in performing general administrative aspects of respective portfolios.
- Assisting in tasks associated with the preparation and execution of major conferences and meetings—including legislative policy briefs and other various tasks as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Pursuing (at least Junior standing) or has achieved a bachelor’s degree from an established college or university;
- Ability to thrive in a political environment;
- Excellent oral and written communications skills;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure;
- Knowledge of local government policies and practices;
- Ability to coordinate partnerships to achieve better services for counties;
- Prior Capitol Hill internship experience in government affairs or other fields plus.
