Engineering Interns with The Construction Branch will perform tests and inspections of construction materials of public works projects being build by the Water Department to assure that work performed by contractors and manufacturers complies with contracts, plans and specifications and meets current standards for work quality. Interpreting construction, contract, and permit requirements, and informing contractors and superiors of non conformity to contractual agreements and construction and permit violations are significant aspects for the work.
The majority of the work activity takes place on active construction sites with some office duties as required. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior. The employee will be trained in the necessary documentation and inspection procedures, and assist in the inspection of larger construction projects which require multiple on-site inspectors. These projects include water and sewer main installation, “green” infrastructure projects, and water and sewer treatment plant infrastructure improvements throughout the City of Philadelphia.
An Intern in this position will obtain experience in construction and construction management process and procedures as well as construction means and methods.
Valid driver’s license is required, and personal transportation is necessary. Civil, mechanical, Construction management, or equivalent engineering major desired.
