Relativity seeks a Mechanical Engineer Intern to join the Summer 2022 Internship Program. This internship position will provide outstanding real-world technical experience.
Your application will be reviewed, and if you are chosen to move forward, you will interview with Engineers at Relativity Space. If you are selected for the internship program, you will be placed on one of the below specialized teams:
Avionics Hardware: The Avionics team is responsible for all aspects of the electrical design on the rocket, from electronics, interconnects, associated mechanical design, testing and initial production of the first 3D printed rocket! This team’s scope includes the flight computers, power systems, RF systems, autonomous flight safety systems, and telemetry.
Launch: The Launch team at Relativity Space builds up our Launch Operations programs at both of our Launch Sites, Vandenberg AFB, and Cape Canaveral Florida. This team leads the strategy and logistics to make launch a reality, as well as manages the Health and Safety teams. As we near our goal of launching in fall 2021, our launch team ensures that our launch pads are well equipped.
Propulsion: The Propulsion team at Relativity Space is responsible for the design, development, testing, and manufacturing of Relativity’s entirely 3D printed rocket engine, Aeon 1. As a part of this team, you will help build, create, and iterate on the full product lifecycle of our Aeon 1 engine.
Powder-Based Additive: The Additive Development team at Relativity Space will develop, create, and operate the most advanced additive manufacturing technologies in the world. This best-in-class team makes sure that the infrastructure, materials, tools, and equipment are in place for us to rapidly iterate and print.
Robotics Hardware/Additive Development: The Robotics Hardware/Additive Development team is responsible for the design, development, installation, and commissioning of the large format robotic 3D printers that build Relativity’s rockets. The team is a true R&D machine that is constantly designing, testing, inventing, questioning, and building in service of creating the next generation of disruptive aerospace manufacturing techniques.
Structures: The Structures team at Relativity Space is responsible for designing, building, analyzing, and testing all of our primary and secondary structures for our launch vehicle. As a part of this team, you will be given the opportunity to conduct tests conveniently at our factory of the future and headquarters in Long Beach, CA.
Vehicle: The Vehicle team at Relativity Space designs, develops, and qualifies all hardware on our launch vehicles. Unique to Relativity, you will get to work across many teams to iterate and support Relativity’s first-of-its-kind 3D printing software and robotics technology.
Summer 2021 intern projects (just a few examples!)
- Tested flight quick disconnects
- Implemented computer vision on the robots to implemented live depth data
- Worked on adding automated sanding/grinding capabilities to our print cells
- Worked on test stand infrastructure to help run tests more often and more efficiently
- Oversaw designing the PCB for the High Voltage Battery Management System (HVBMS)
- Helped set up an anomaly detection framework for stargate printers
- Printed rocket engine parts!
Skills/Competencies we’re looking for:
- Current undergraduate or graduate student earning your degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 1+ years relevant internship experience preferred, not required
- You love working on CAD and have proficient knowledge of a CAD package
- Experience designing, sizing, and analyzing of highly engineered parts
