What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking Summer – R&D Graduate Interns to join our dynamic team! The DOE/NNSA Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP) is aimed at developing the next generation of experts in cyber and information security specialist. This internship program is designed specifically for students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) who are currently pursuing degrees in the field of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or any closely related field of study and are interested in furthering their knowledge in the area of cyber security and information protection while working on their graduate degree. The MSIPP program also provides students with the opportunity to work on a diverse collection of ongoing Sandia projects focused exclusively on high-consequence information systems and various aspects of cyber security research, including conducting science-based computer security research and vulnerability analysis as well as developing computer security tools. The MSIPP program matches skills of qualified candidates with projects and provides mentorship. The goal of the MSIPP is to foster students’ appreciation for the unique challenges of cyber security and encourages the exploration of original ideas necessary to keep pace with both the rapid changes in information security technology and the increasing sophistication of cyber threats. MSI’s that qualify for this internship are the University of Texas at San Antonio, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Savannah State University, and North Carolina A&T.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor’s degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position.

Qualifications We Desire

  • GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale
  • Desired skills in network programming, system testing, virus and malicious code defense and basic cryptography
  • Desired skills in Computer hardware, knowledge such as FPGA, VHDL, Low Level Programming
  • Desired skills in software tools such as IDA Pro, VMware, Wireshark
  • Desired skills in programming and scripting languages such as C,C++,C#, Java, Python, Ruby, PHP, SQL

Additional Requirements for the MSIPP:

  • Majoring in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or a very closely related field of study
  • Graduate students should have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of information security, computer architecture, and networking
  • Demonstrated knowledge of at least one or more programming languages
  • Ability to work with more than one operating system

Applicant must be enrolled full time in one of the following MSI colleges/universities:

  • University of Texas at San Antonio
  • North Carolina Agricultural & Technology State University
  • University of Nevada, Las Vegas
  • Savanna State University

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
