The Mechanical Sciences Branch of the Army Research Office (ARO) in Research Triangle Park, NC, is actively looking to fill the position of Complex Dynamics and Systems Program Manager to lead an innovative, high pay-off, basic research program in Complex Dynamics and Systems. The ideal candidate would have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering with educational training and/or experience in conducting research in areas primarily related to understanding the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of dynamical systems, embodied learning (especially as it pertains to distributed control and sensing), emergent behavior, smart metamaterials, and information thermodynamics. Candidates with educational training/experience across a broad range of dynamics and control experience will be considered. Program management experience is desired but not essential. The duties of this position involve identification and cultivation of new scientific opportunities for basic research investments in the area of complex dynamics and systems, formulation of research programs based on these identified opportunities, management of the program primarily through grants/contracts to the extramural research community (e.g. universities), coordination with other funding agencies’ managers, and transition of that knowledge to the Army. The research breakthroughs derived from the program as a result of incumbent’s efforts will ultimately lead to the development of critical new future technologies and capabilities to empower future U.S. Army Soldiers. The program manager will be expected to maintain on-going awareness of recent developments in the field of dynamical systems, conduct workshops and studies to identify new emerging opportunities for future investments, and promote close relationships and partnerships between the Army and scientific, educational, and research institutions to address Army science needs and knowledge gaps.POSITION INFORMATION:*This is a federal civilian employment opportunity open to U.S. citizens.
