Know Your Pathway. Build Your Timeline.

Work authorization is not a barrier, it is a roadmap. Understanding each milestone lets you align your career strategy with your legal pathway and build the track record that opens long-term doors in the U.S. workforce.

CPT — Curricular Practical Training integrates real-world internship experience directly into your academic curriculum. Your first step into the U.S. professional world.

OPT — Optional Practical Training serves as your bridge after graduation, allowing you to apply your technical skills within the U.S. workforce for up to 12 months.

STEM OPT Extension — As a GW Engineering student, you likely qualify for an additional 24 months of OPT for a total of 36 months of work authorization. Employer must be enrolled in E-Verify.

GW Engineering Career Services supports professional development and job search strategy. All legal matters regarding visa status, including CPT, OPT, and STEM OPT authorization  are managed exclusively by the GW International Services Office (ISO). Consult with an ISO advisor before beginning any employment or internship.

The D.C. Ecosystem Works in Your Favor.

Proximity creates possibility. Washington, D.C. is one of the most internationally accessible job markets in the country and GW Engineering puts you at its center.

Contrary to popular belief, F-1 students can work with federal contractors. While most government agencies require U.S. citizenship for direct employment, many private contractors offer unclassified projects open to international students on CPT and OPT. Because most engineering and technology firms in the D.C. area are federal contractors, they are already enrolled in E-Verify making them STEM OPT-eligible employers. Many GW Engineering international students build their careers right here in the metro area.

Check employer eligibility early. Use the E-Verify search tool to align your job search with your long-term work authorization goals.
