Navigating Midterms and Your Career Search: Tips for Success

As midterms approach, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed balancing coursework with the ongoing pursuit of internships and job opportunities. But don’t worry! With the right approach and a bit of strategic planning, you can make significant strides in your career journey without sacrificing your academic goals. Here are some tips to help you navigate this busy time effectively:

Managing Midterm Madness:

1. Classroom Notes: Most of the retained content from a lecture or classroom discussion is usually lost the moment you step out of the room. Whilst memorization might not be the end goal, your notes can be handy in recollection and a better understanding of the concepts taught in class.

2. Collaborative Study: The exam syllabus can be vast and difficult to grasp as you initially start preparing. In such a case, your friends/classmates might help unpuzzle the scope of content relevant to the exam.

3. Practice Exams: Most professors are kind enough to provide a practice exam to help students go through the question pattern before attempting the actual exam. Don’t they say “Practice makes perfect!” And you never know if the same questions might from the practice exam might appear in the actual one.

4. Office Hours: While professors and TAs host office hours during the entire semester, you should feel free to request extended office hours, at the discretion of the professor, if you need additional assistance with a concept or problem that you might face.

5. Time Management: Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. It’s all the small steps and contributions that you make every day towards learning the concepts that add up to a wholesome exam preparation. The last of before your exam should ideally be dedicated to content revision and practice problems.

6. Limiting Distractions: Yes today’s environment is filled with abundant stimuli to throw you off your A-game while preparing for your midterm. So how about you position yourself in a surrounding where everyone is focused on a similar goal? GW SEH has plenty of study rooms to help you focus and concentrate on your preparation.

Career Search:

1. Utilize Your Network: Networking is key in any career search. Reach out to GWU SEAS alumni through platforms like LinkedIn or alumni events. Don’t be afraid to ask for informational/mock interviews or advice. You never know who might offer a valuable connection or insight into a potential opportunity.

2. Seek Referrals: Once you’ve built connections, don’t hesitate to ask for referrals. If you’ve had positive interactions with professionals in your field of interest, politely inquire if they know of any internship or job openings. Personal referrals often give you a foot in the door.

3. Embrace Resilience: Rejection is part of the process. Don’t let it discourage you. Instead, use it as a learning opportunity. Ask for feedback whenever possible and use it to refine your approach. Remember, every “no” brings you one step closer to a “yes.”

4. Expand Your Network: Don’t limit yourself to alumni or recruiters. Attend industry events, career fairs, and workshops offered by SEAS Career Services. These events provide excellent opportunities to meet professionals in your field and expand your network further.

5. Leverage Career Services Resources: Take advantage of the resources available to you through GWU SEAS Career Services. From resume workshops to mock interviews, our team is here to support you every step of the way. Schedule appointments, attend events, and explore the job tracker to stay informed about internship and job opportunities.
