Optosurgical, LLC is an early-stage imaging medical device startup that is developing a handheld camera system that can provide structural and functional tissue information to operating surgeons in real-time. We are looking to hire a highly motivated graduate student for a full-time/part-time summer internship opportunity, with the potential to extend into the fall semester.
An ideal candidate will have a strong background in: Optical System Design (Zemax, LightTools software experiences), Mechanical Engineering and Prototyping, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. If interested, the candidate will be exposed to various aspects of what it’s like to grow a startup from the ground up (R&D, Optical system integration & prototyping). Work will be performed primarily in our Columbia, Maryland office. Pay is commensurate with experience (minimum $17/hr). Specific duties and responsibilities:
● Opto-mechanical design using Zemax and Solidworks or similar software platform.
● Fast prototyping related to imaging medical device & components.
● Assist in day-to-day logistical and operational tasks related to the R&D projects.
● Perform stakeholder interviews and usability testing.
● Device testing and data collection in the lab setting and operating rooms at partner hospitals.
● Stay up to date with relevant research and prepare weekly/monthly updates for the team.
Required qualifications:
● Strong written and verbal communication skills
● Fast-prototyping experience
● Optical simulation & design skills
● Demonstrated CAD skills (Solidworks, 3D prototyping)
● Flexibility with assigned tasks and duties
● Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time/part-time basis for the duration of the work without sponsorship.
Ideal applicants will have:
● Experience working with Regulatory (FDA) and/or Quality Management Systems documentation / medical device manufacturing
● Python, Java, and/or Matlab programming experience are pluses
● Understand basic ideas and terms of optical imaging
● Usability testing experience + familiarity with usability documentation (IEC 62366, etc.)
● Familiarity with optical technology: Hyperspectral imaging, Near-infrared imaging, Laser speckle imaging
● Familiarity with medical field: thyroid surgery, liver surgery, abdominal surgery, bowel surgery
